“Puff in a Huff” is an imaginative new production for young children. Preparation for the play has been undertaken with ESCC PHSE and Healthy Schools, Hastings & Rother and East Susssex Downs and Weald NHS Health Promotion and School Nurses , The play is being run in conjunction with the School Nurse Team, and The Stop Smoking Service who will be offering on going support to the children, staff and parents after the play has finished.

“Puff in a Huff” uses puppets and colourful characters to convey messages about the harmful effects of cigarette smoking.  Most children dislike living in a home where people smoke tobacco, they also worry about the health of the smokers.  Using simple language and concepts the children learn about some of the harmful health problems associated with tobacco smoking, how difficult it is to quit, where people who want to quit can gain help and how a compromise can be reached where smokers, smoke outside.

This production is taking place during term 6 to fit in with the PHSE/SEAL planning tool, which recommends year 3 studying tobacco education at that time.

Synopsis

Puff is a dragon who smokes tobacco, her habit causes Woofle the dog and Henry a boy, to become ill. Woofle is taken to the vet who explains he is becoming ill through licking the tobacco residue off his fur and then swallowing it.  The vet says Puff needs to stop smoking The children also encourage Puff to stop.  Puff agrees to quit however she feels so upset that her cigarette smoking has caused Henry and Woofle to become ill, she needs another cigarette. The performers and children, using a simplified version of forum theatre, help Puff to choose to smoke outside.

The above production is funded by Sussex Community Foundation and  Hasting Borough Council in partnership with NHS East Sussex Community Health Services and NHS Hastings and Rother and East Sussex Downs and Weald.
